Sam is a local artist who has completed a Bachelor of Natural History Illustration with Honours at University of Newcastle. Sam favours carbon dust, pen and ink, pencil, digital illustration, and alternative photography techniques. Sam’s work has been shown locally and regionally, including Gosford Regional
Art Gallery, Royal Botanic Gardens, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Royal Easter Show, and in exhibitions with Central Coast Art Society, Tuggerah Lakes Art Society, and Wildlife and Botanical Artists, Inc.

Sam’s passion is nature but her obsession is paleontology and she also enjoys entomology and botany. The intricate detail of each piece is reflective of the hoursof research put in by the artist. Being part of the Art Society for the past three years has opened many opportunities to Sam, including exhibitions, workshops, paint out days, and informative talks. This has allowed her own techniques and ideas to evolve and grow.

The raffle prize is a botanical illustration of a Lady Fingers Orchid or White Fingers Orchid, which is a terrestrial orchid found locally. It flowers between
April and October with a small 3cm white flower. You can find this orchid in shady areas of coastal bush land. Sam drew this artwork after finding this native orchid during one of her many bush walks on the Central Coast and Newcastle. Sam will be submitting an artwork in each category because she favours different techniques. Peacock Feathers is a cyanotype photogram, which is an alternative photography technique which uses the sun to expose the image. Creating a beautiful blue image of the items placed on the calico. Gum Leaves is a miniature watercolour exploring the movement of the leaves at the tips of the branches of Eucalypt trees. The third artwork for the ‘Works on Paper’ category is being completed but will feature a natural subject.

In addition to original artworks, Sam has a range of greeting cards, gift tags, cyanotype, photographic and art prints available for sale at markets locally. Formore details, please find her on Facebook at @SamBlanksArt or Instagram at @Sam_Blanks_Art
