Judith Hoste

Profile

Landscape artist and Art Teacher

Judith was educated at Penshurst Girls' High School, where she was awarded the winning art trophy in her Intermediate Year. She then had to put her art career on hold while working in the bank and bringing up her family. When the children were established at school she found the time to take classes in oil painting with Ethyl Jamieson at the Noonameena Studio, Booker Bay. She did this for four years, until the death of Mrs. Jamieson, at which time she began teaching beginners in order to keep the studio running.

Later came the offer to teach at the Amber Arts Gallery, Umina Beach; this has occupied her for the past 25 years, during which time she, with her husband Ken, took on ownership of the gallery. While employing Neville Johnson to teach watercolour techniques she took the opportunity to sit in and learn. The same applied with Hal Paddle who used acrylics. In 1988 Judith attended Mitchell College, Bathurst, where she studied under Patricia Moy (pastels) and Casey Sealy (oils).

Judith works in, and teaches, all media ar her home studio /gallery in Umina Beach. For the past 10 years she has been an occasional tutor for the CCAS, taking workshops in pastels, oils and acrylics and will hold workshops in watercolour in May 2010 at the Regional Gallery. She also teaches watercolour techniques weekly for the Ettalong Beach Arts & Crafts Centre.

Exhibiting all year, in all media, at local, country and interstate areas, Judith has had continuing success over the past 6 years, winning many varied awards. Amongst her latest awards in 2009 Judith received 1st prize in the Scone Art Prize/Open Section for a pastel work that had been the subject of her June workshop Week 1. The 2nd June workshop pastel painting has been reproduced in the Gosford City Council Sustainability Report of 2009. Over the years success in sales have been made at the Royal Easter Show, Mosman Art Prize, Frog Hollow Art Exhibition, Safari Appeal, Gosford Art Prize, with the regular exhibitions of Currabubula Red Cross and at the Bright Art Gallery.

Judith has had great success in the Gosford Council's "Grandma Moses Art Prize" since 2004, receiving 1st prize in the Central Coast Inspired section for 3 years in a row. In 2009 Judith won the Watercolour section and had the painting purchased.

Judith's awards in 2009 were received at Tumut, Forster, Scone, Grandma Moses and Blackheath.

Enthusiastic as ever, Judith is looking forward to another year of painting in 2010.
