Meredith Gilmore
Pastel ArtistBorn in 1957, Meredith grew up in Sydney, and completed a psychology degree at Macquarie University in 1980. A career in the public service and consulting followed, living in Townsville, Canberra and Hobart along the way. Then in 2000 came a sea change to the Central Coast of NSW, and with it an introduction to pastels, after some earlier attempts at watercolour. Using pastels reignited Meredith's childhood love of coloured pencils, and uncovered an ability to create artworks of dogs.
"People love their dogs, and I love drawing them for people, it's as simple as that. I discovered in art class a few years ago that I could capture the character of a dog, starting with pictures of my old dogs, then doing pictures for friends, and going on from there." Meredith loves colour and uses this as her starting point, working mainly in pastel pencils and hard pastel, to bring out the shape and characteristics of each dog, to "bring it to life". Meredith's specialty is head study portraits of dogs, but she also enjoys seascapes and a range of other subjects. Since 2000 Meredith has done over one hundred dog portraits, shown a range of works in group exhibitions and galleries, and had two solo exhibitions - Dogs and Beaches in 2004 and A World of Animals in 2008. In October 2006 Meredith won the inaugural people’s choice award, The Smithy, at the Gosford Overflow Exhibition, with a large dog portrait called Gentle Giant, and was runner-up in 2008 with Tiger Resting. Meredith is also a presenter on community radio station Coast FM 963, and produces a weekly arts program called Coast Arts broadcast Sundays 6-7pm. For more details go to www.coastarts.com.au
