JUDITH IS AN AWARD WINNING ARTIST & TEACHER OF UMINA BEACH …….CENTRAL COAST OF N.S.W.
I have been painting since 1981 and teaching and exhibiting from 1985. I work in oils, watercolours, pastel, acrylic and tutor in these mediums also. Drawing tutoring is also available. I paint all subjects, but am drawn very much to our beautiful wildflowers and the Central Coast landscape.
I have been a member of the Central Coast Art Society for 32 years and have just been elected as President of the Society. I am also a member of the Central Coast Watercolour Society.
I attended Penshurst Girls High School for my secondary education and on finishing in my Intermediate Certificate Year I received the award for Art, as top in the year of the subject.
I started into oil painting classes in 1981 only because a friend suggested that I go along with her to the class at the ‘Noonameena’ Art Studio with teacher, Mrs Ethel Jamieson at Booker Bay. Mrs Jamieson ran a 3 year course, in oils, which I completed then stayed on for another year. I was then asked the following year to teach at ‘Noonameena’ the beginners classes, this is when my teaching career commenced, and I am still teaching to this day. It started with teaching in oils using the method Mrs Jamieson had instilled in me. It was a very positive method regarding mixing colours and making the correct number of tones to be used for each area of the painting, which is very important to give realism to every painting. Every student I teach working in oils or acrylics is shown this method of making tones for their work. Another aspect of my learning at ‘Noonameena’ was teaching the class how to hold an exhibition. An exhibition of students work was held every Easter, with proceeds going to a charity on the Central Coast. I didn’t think I needed to know this at the time, but it was invaluable information that has helped me through the years to organise and co-ordinate exhibitions.
Word spread about my classes at ‘Noonameena’ and in 1985 I was approached by the owner of the Amber Arts Gallery in Umina Beach to hold classes at the gallery. After teaching at Amber Arts for 1 year, in 1986 the gallery was offered to myself and my husband to purchase as the owner was selling and we are still running Amber Arts.
It was then that I learnt Watercolours from tutor, Neville Johnston, already established at the gallery with his watercolour class. Neville was a brilliant artist, so I was very lucky to have had instruction from him. After working only in oils for 7 years I had to find out just how with watercolours you can see underneath colours showing through colours placed over them. That learning helped make it possible for me to teach watercolours as well as oils when Neville decided to finish up as a tutor.
After watercolours came Pastel tuition, with Patricia Moy at the Mitchell College, Bathurst ‘Summer School’ in 1988. There were no teachers of pastel in my area, so I started incorporating classes in pastel for those interested.
Also in that year, 1988, I attended the ‘Winter School’ at Bathurst, studying with Kasey Sealy in oils.
Then an Acrylic artist on the Central Coast, Hal Paddle, gave a year of his time to instruct classes using Acrylics at my Gallery. So then I understood acrylics and the fast drying time of them, compared to oils, which helps when you need a painting to dry very quickly.
I have been exhibiting through the years, in all media, at local, country and interstate shows, and since 1999 started to receive many awards. This has continued until the present day with receiving an award this year, 2016, at the Gosford Show Art Exhibition, it was 3rd Place/Commended for a pastel titled ‘The Red Centre’. The most outstanding of all awards was winning the ‘Scone Art Prize’ in 2009, with the painting selling also.
2009 was a very good year for me also winning awards at Tumut, Forster, Blackheath and Gosford Council’s Grandma Moses Art Prize.
I have also tutored workshops for the Central Coast Art Society, in a variety of mediums, over the years. I have just completed the monthly workshops for May,(1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month) for them, which was En Plein Air in the Japanese Garden at the Gosford Regional Gallery. A few years back I was asked to tutor a weekend workshop at Scone for their art group and have been invited to tutor workshops for the Toukley Art Society and the Tuggerah Lakes Art Society. Also held Watercolour workshops for the Ettalong Beach Arts & Craft Centre in March this year.
In February this year I was approached to do a painting demonstration at the Woy Woy Library, which was very well attended and was done in 2 hours. It was a local area sunset scene and since the painting has been sold
In 2014 I attended 2 weeks of painting in Tuscany, a small village named Lucignano,
with tutor Kasey Sealy. This was my first try of En Plein Air painting. We worked in Oils and I found it very rewarding and this really showed me ‘how the light changes’.
Kasey Sealy is a great artist, so watching his demonstrations each day we painted was amazing! I have followed his work for many years, so going with him was special.
I was invited in 2015 by the Norfolk Island Travel Centre to be part of their organised
painting tutorials for 1 weeks length, taking the group to a variety of fabulous spots around the Island, views to die for!
With my classes at my home studio/gallery I teach all mediums, with mixed classes,
Monday – Wednesday, and also teach watercolour classes for the Ettalong Beach Arts & Crafts Centre on Fridays, so at present I am working mostly in watercolour, unless I am asked to do something special in one of the other mediums.
I have had sales at the Royal Easter Show, Mosman Art Prize, Gosford Art Prize, Parramatta Foundation Art Awards, Currabubula, Bright, Kiama, Blackheath, Tarana and many more local areas. Buyers have sent or taken my works to the USA, UK, Belgium, NZ, Sth.Africa, North Korea, Norway, Sweden.
