They are so prone to the weather conditions. Let us hope that they are perfect for us this year. Correa Bay and Copacabana are old favourites.
Suggestions for new locations are always appreciated.

If you haven’t been to our paint out mornings before, bring your choice of painting or sketching gear and come along
and join in. There is no starting or finishing times, come and go as you please.

Morning tea is at 10am and lunch for those who would like to stay on, is at 12 noon. Non members of the Society are most welcomes to come.

On a personal note, I would like to thank you all for the positive thoughts given me during my recent unexpected major emergency surgery. I hope to be back enjoying the paint outs with you again soon.

Art Workshops Central Coast - Central Coast Art Society

2018 Workshops – November 7th and 21st

Workshops

Workshop November 7th and 21st

Cyanotype and Botanical Drawing

Unfortunately, the Scratchboard workshop has been postponed till next year.

Cyanotype is an alternative photography technique which use the sun for exposure. You can use real objects (like feathers, leaves, glass ornaments, or anything that casts a shadow) or full-size negatives to create a print. The prints can be quite unique depending on the strength of the sun, where it was exposed, and how long it was exposed for.

The cyanotype emulsion can be applied to paper or fabric.
They can be toned with different teas and other tannin-rich products after exposure.

This month each workshop will be cut into two parts with the first part focusing on cyanotype and while we wait for the prints to expose, we will learn some botanical drawing techniques.

Michael Galovic has shown his artwork around the world.
Icons + Art was published in 2006 and features his work from 1990 to 2006. He has a studio/gallery on the Central Coast.

Art Workshops Central Coast - Central Coast Art Society

2018 – Workshop 5th & 19th of September with Cheryl Bruce Watercolour

Workshops

Cheryl Bruce

She is a well- known local Watercolourist and will be painting Still Life (Flowers and other elements) this month.

Cheryl will provide the subject matter for Workshop 1 and members can bring along  flowers from their own garden, Favourite
objects eg teapots or other items for Workshop
2 (Cheryl will still provide a mix of items as well).
Please bring along the materials in the list,

Materials List

Boards and masking tape – you will need a sealed board
a little bigger than your paper.
Watercolour Paper – allow 1 sheet per workshop – ¼
sheet or A3, or 1/2 sheet if you like to paint larger. Good
quality paper please for these techniques to work
well – Arches or Saunders Waterford are preferable,
and a rough texture is better for landscape/seascape
than smooth or hot pressed. I only buy Arches
300gms Rough. It is most economical to buy the
paper in full sheets and cut into 1/2 or ¼ sheets.
Paints – *Ultramarine Blue, *Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue,
*Rose Madder Genuine (or Permanent Rose if you don’t
have RMG), *Naples Yellow, *Windsor or lemon yellow
or Aureolin, Cad Yellow, *Brown Madder, *Cadmium
Red, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna or *Yellow Ochre, Burnt
Umber, Indigo or Neutral Tint, *Australian Turquoise or
Cob Turquoise Lt. Art Spectrum White Gouache – please
note: White Gouache is not the same as Chinese White.
This is my general palette, don’t feel that you have to
go out and purchase all of these colours, but please
ensure you have a warm and cool blue, a primary
yellow, a pink and a red, and some darks & earth
colours. If you are starting out selecting colours, I
have put an * next to the ones you will use the most.
All colours bar white gouache I use Windsor &
Newton.
Brushes – Script liner brush script liners are long, and not
too fine – I like quite a thickish script -#6.
Sables or squirrel brushes are best for watercolour – at
least up to number 10 or 12
Plus a larger mop brush.

If new to watercolour please ask for assistance in the art store. Please don’t buy white hog hair bristle brushes as they are for oil (aside from the large flat one picture – good for wetting down paper)
Paper towel (very important that is absorbent brand),
Pencils – B or 2B, & kneadable eraser,
Divided water-well or two water containers Water spritzer, and hair dryer (not essential that everyone brings one)
Old painting towel & a couple of washers or rags.
Easel with a 45 degree or lower setting if you like to use
one, or we throw a couple of books under the board.
Plastic palette – the type of palette is very important for successful watercolours. You will need one with deep-ish wells (on left of picture) for mixing large washes, or 3-4 small dishes like the back of the picture and a palette to store and mix your paints. Flat plastic or ceramic plates are not very successful. Tiny, outdoor painting palettes also will not give enough mixing space.

About Workshops in general:
Start at 9.30-12.30pm 1st & 3rd Wednesday each month
in Studio 2, Gosford Arts Centre.
Cost: $25.00 per week

2 October The Waratahs along the Waratah Trig Road, just in off Patonga Drive. B 42

Spring is here, we can look forward to nicer weather.
The waratah location is a natural bush setting in the Brisbane Water National Park. The best spot for us to go this year is along from where we usually stop. It is the Waratah Trig Road, just in off the main road, Patonga Drive. There are a nice lot of waratahs in bud there and just coming into colour. There are also nice trees and other native colour. Parking will be safer for us. The turn into the Waratah Trig Road is near an 80KM speed zone sign.

Please note that there are no toilet facilities, nearest being down on the Pearl Beach waterfront.
At Mt Penang, it is nice painting around the lake. There is no entry fee into the gardens.
Other locations are also popular locations, taking us from one end of the coast to the other. Suggestions for new locations are always welcomed. If you haven’t been to our paint out mornings before come along and join in. There are no starting or finishing times, come and go as you please.
Bring your choice of painting/sketching gear and come along and join in. Morning tea is at 10am and lunch at 12Noon.

CCAS Winter Exhibition Wrap-up – by our President

Art Events

Raffle Winner – Michael Daly

I have had 6 weeks off from CCAS duties, so
now’s back to work.

I want to thank everyone who worked so hard
to make our Winter Exhibition come together.
With quite a number of the committee unavailable,
many thanks to members who obliged and
worked extra roster shifts. We only sold 2 framed
paintings, some jewellery and cards, but weather
conditions didn’t help.

The raffle was won by Michael Daly, congratulations
Michael, Many thanks to Gwynneth Boyce
for donating the pastel work and Christies Picture
Framing for framing the pastel.
The People’s Choice was won by Marlene Palagyi
for her watercolour “Snow Owl”, congratulations
Marlene. (as Featured above)

Don’t forget we are having a Social Outing in September
on the Riverboat Postman Cruise –from
Brooklyn, in lieu of our Come, Listen, Talk meeting
at the Gallery studio. All details were in the July
newsletter and are repeated in this one. The cut
off date for booking and payment is 7th September.
Once again the Combined Art Societies of Sydney
are organising the Art Direct Open Studios Art
Trail taking place throughout the month of October.
A few members have participated in this in
previous years, opening their studios to the public.
This year the opportunity to hire the Davistown
Progress Hall has risen and details are yet to be
finalised.

If arrangements work out, we are looking at the
weekend of 13th – 14th October. If you are interested
in participating, we could have a very nice
display as a group of CCAS members.
We will need to register by 31st August, so
could you let me know by 10th August 2018 on
0407 448 574 if you would like to get involved.
More details are further on in the newsletter.
