Calling for entries for ‘Fab Fakes’: An art exhibition of legal forgeries!

Fab Fakes is the most anticipated of exhibitions at the Art House in Wyong. Submissions are being accepted Australia wide with prizes in the offering of $2000 for first and $1000 for the runner up. Highly commended artworks will receive prizes up to the value of $200.

The quality and standard of artworks continues to grow each year. The judging panel from Tuggerah Lakes Art Society, Peter Tassell and Robert Chapman, will be joined this year with 2017 Archibald Packer’s Prize winner Peter Smeeth who is a renowned artist and resident of the Central Coast.

Emulating the masters has long been heralded across the globe as one of the best ways to learn art, which is how the exhibition started over twenty years ago. By copying an original, artists gain knowledge in colour, style and technique – the only proviso being that the original artist has been deceased for over seventy years. All artworks will be offered for sale and according to local artist Gail Brigden “The exhibition is one of legal forgeries, so what better way to get your hands on a masterpiece at just a fraction of the price of the original?”

Fab Fakes is an initiative of Tuggerah Lakes Art Society and this year is sponsored by the Elderslee Foundation – Growing our Community.

The exhibition will be held in the Art House, Wyong, from Friday 16th to 30th  November from 10am to 4pm weekdays and 1pm to 5pm on weekends.

This exhibition coincides with Wyong Drama Group’s production of “BRASSED OFF”, showing in the theatre from 16th to 24th November, inquiries: or box office. Evening viewing of the exhibition will be possible during performances of “BRASSED OFF”.

Entries for the Fab Fakes exhibition close on the 12th October, forms can be downloaded from the Fab Fakes website

Media spokesperson and artist for Fab Fakes Exhibition: Gail Brigden

0414 615 233,

Gail’s entry for Fab Fakes is a painting and story of DAME NELLIE MELBA (1861-1931) world famous opera singer, from Melbourne, Australia, who also happens to be Gail’s great great aunt. She also has a rare book produced and published by Dame Nellie Melba in 1915 to help the Belgium Relief Fund, as part of the 1st World War effort.  It contains colour plate illustrations of famous Australian artists and famous Australian writers of the time, all hand signed. Also appearing at the FAB FAKES exhibition will be a ‘hand signed’ poster from one of Dame Nellie Melba’s many concerts.

About Fab Fakes

In 1998, one of Tuggerah Lakes Art Society’s (TLAS) members, Brian Hasler, founded the FAB FAKES Art Exhibition. His idea of the best way to learn art, like many art tutors, was to emulate the ‘masters’. To copy – make a ‘forgery’, a fake of a masterpiece. This contest eventually became a tradition over the years, attracting artists from all over Australia

Vincent’s Creative Journey

Art Exhibitions, News

Yes, the youngster is coming of age. After so many wonderful opportunities at Central Coast Art Society workshops, paint-outs and group exhibitions, together with the personal encouragement given by so many Art Society members, Vincent Cavanagh is having his first exhibition at the Community Gallery, Gosford Regional Gallery this weekend, Friday 21 August – Sunday 23 August.

Preparing the exhibition has highlighted just how essential being an Art Society member has been to his creative development. Thank you for all you have done for him. The exhibition will be a walk down memory lane starting with the first works he exhibited as a teenager back in 2011, all the way up to his most recent works including some of his TAFE projects. Short speeches and cake cutting will start at 11.30am on Saturday 22 August.

Come and see how his work has developed over the years, and with your collective wisdom help him work out which direction he should take next.  Vincent2011to2015at20percentCreativeJourneyCavanagh DL Flyer-0Crop75percent
