Scratchboard Workshop with Sam Blanks
Scratchboard or scraperboard is when the artist scratches off darker ink to reveal the white clay layer beneath. The white clay can be coloured after the board has been scratched. Scratchboard art can be quite detailed using fine lines to create tones.
In the first week of the workshop, we will be using scratchboard (which already has the black ink applied). In the second week we will use a coloured clayboard, colouring the board with acrylic inks before scratching. As the inks take longer than 24 hours to completely dry, we will apply the inks in the first week. Clayboards with inks applied will be available for people who miss the first week.
Packs of the materials needed will be available for sale for $20 and include
- 1 x 5x7inch Scratchboard
- 1 x 5x7inch Clayboard
- 1 pair White Gloves
- 1 x Scratchboard Tool
- 1 x Carbon Transfer Paper (white)

Wednesday 3 and 17 April
Pastels with Judith Hoste
For Week 1 the photo of the bush is just an example of the style of lesson we will be working on.
The scene we will be doing will have light coming through the centre of the trees, connecting to a grass tree in the foreground. By using the green paper, we can leave areas of the paper as part of the bush.
For Week 2 the scene changes to have the ‘Centre of Light’ reflecting on the water, which makes the sparkle. The blue paper is used for this lesson.
I will have reference material for everyone to work from, plus you will be following my teaching as I take you in stages through each scene.
Paper Mi Tientes ‘Tex’ A3 Deep Green and Dark Blue/Indigo $3.20 at Eckersleys.
If you can’t find the ‘Mi Tientes Tex’ paper, any pastel paper will do in those colours.
Colours will work for both days……White….Black…Yellow Ochre + other Yellows.
Blues…Greens…Browns…Burnt Sienna & Burnt Umber…Mauves/Purples…Pink
Try to have ‘SOFT’ pastels for the main part of the lessons and some hard ones to use for detail and thin line work.
Bring along what you have as your pastel stock.
Tissues and Wet Wipes
Board to attach paper, can tape to board or bring bull dog clips, Newspaper for under paper for padding.
Kneadable Rubber or Blue Tack.
The tissues are for wiping the pastels clean as they get very dirty, transferring colours. The wet wipes are for cleaning your hands while working, as they will get grubby. You can wear gloves if you wish.
